hate mail to America

Dear America,

I look around and I am appalled by the political state of our country. The lack of empathy, reason, and decency currently present in our government makes me sick to my stomach. The loud and clear attacks on minorities, the same minorities where this country derives its identity, are uncalled for and atrocious. The utter acts of blatant racism and attempts to silence people of color remind me of the stuff we see in our history books; supposed cautionary tales. Except as our present reveals, we haven’t learned anything from history at all. Members of our country have fallen for the charismatic presence of our country’s president, a man not worthy of naming. The threat to women’s rights, the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals, the rights of immigrants and children of immigrants, all people who are HUMAN BEINGS. The right to life, liberty, and happiness: all our country’s values that we flaunt so arrogantly yet are so far out of reach. I think we forget that our country is founded upon the blood, sweat, and tears of minorities. I fear for my own rights, for the rights of my fellow people of color and women. War, bills that are actively removing my rights, mass deportation (EVEN OF US CITIZENS), mass genocide, where does it end? America, not only am I ashamed of you, I am enraged! I am enraged that millions of Americans are losing their healthcare and right to reproductive care, essential human rights. I am furious that millions of kids are being slaughtered in Gaza and you are funding and encouraging it. I am horrified of the concentration camps that are conveniently going unreported and strategically located out of sight; and out of sight, out of mind right? WRONG. I am appalled of the censorship and intimidation towards citizens speaking up for their rights and the rights of others. Those who are peacefully protesting and being met with abuse by law enforcement: the lapdogs of the government. The lynchings of innocent Black men that are being ignored and those responsible not receiving any accountability or punishment. The attempt to erase the influence and presence of the LGBTQ+ community, a community that has always existed, even if it was forced into hiding. We are attacking the very people and communities that make America what it is.
As someone with a degree in criminal justice, I stare at the state of the world with disgust, BUT I hold the passion and conviction in my heart to make a change. I want to give voices to those who have gone unheard for far too long. Although it may seem irreversible now, I have hope in my heart that someday, I will be given the opportunity to speak up, make change, and keep making change. It is posts like this very one, the ones who raise awareness about what is going on in the world, that help others wake up and realize what’s actually going on.
